DocDoc, a startup that helps people find doctors in Southeast Asia, announced today that it has raised a $11.5 million SGD (about $8.6 million) series A.
The funding, which was led by Raymond Choong Yee How, president and chief executive officer of Malaysia banking conglomerate Hong Leong Financial Group and included participation from Sparklabs Global Ventures, will be used to expand DocDoc’s presence in the eight countries it already operates in (Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Hong Kong, South Korea, and India), as well as tackle new markets.
DocDoc, which is based in Singapore and lets users research doctors before booking appointments through the platform, is targeted not only toward locals, but also “medical tourists” who travel to other countries in seek of lower-cost care or specific services. Countries that have been busy promoting their healthcare systems to foreigners include Singapore, Malaysia, India, and South Korea.
In a prepared statement, DocDoc co-founder and chief executive officer Cole Sirucek said “Our mission is to help Southeast Asia bolster its leading medical tourism position by effectively marketing the scale, scope, and sophistication of the region’s medical establishment.”
DocDoc was launched in 2012 and merged with competitor DoctorPage the next year. Its earlier investors include 500 Startups and Jungle Ventures.
