GM CEO Mary Barra announced today that Chevy will have 14 models across the brand that will have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto available. These cars will be 2016 model years and will be available this year. The all new Chevy Cruze will be the first complete model available.
“I think we’ll have a promising add for the company and they’ll love it. It’s going to have to be coupled with the radio [choices],” said Barra, but noted that customers wouldn’t necessarily need the highest option available. Barra also said that they would announce more models at Opal tomorrow.
Barra said that a Chevy car in the ‘teens’ price-wise would be available with the choice of CarPlay or Android Auto.
Barra says that we’ll see more change in the car industry in the next 5-10 years than we saw in the previous 50. “It’s on every facet,” Barra said.
“When you look at the integration of the vehicle in all aspects of driving…it’s hard to do that safely,” Barra said in a response to iterating quickly in an industry that has a longer development cycle. “But you have to be able to marry that with technology that’s being changed in months, not years.”
Barra was interviewed by Walt Mossberg today at the Code conference in California.
Barra was named as the first female CEO in GM history in January of 2014. Barra has overseen the company’s transition out of government oversight and nailed down $16.2M in compensation last year. She’s been with the company for over 34 years and during her tenure has had to face a rough period of government inquiries and scrutiny due to deaths attributed to ignition switch flaws that triggered vehicle recalls. Barra emerged from the crisis with plenty of issues still in play (like criminal suits) but a general respect for her ability to lead in a tough period.
