EyeWire Is Making Neuroscience Research Cool Again

Thanks to a little startup sprouting up from Boston, I was able to map out a small section of a neuron through EyeWire, a company that’s gamifying its neuroscience research in order to enlist the help of people from all over the world.

To understand how the brain works, scientists need to figure out how electrical impulses travel through its vast network of 85 billion neurons, connected through 100 trillion synapses. And to do this, they need to map the structure and connections of all these neurons. Enter EyeWire, a company that’s crowdsourcing this mapping process with a fun and addictive online game.

“I think that exploring the brain is the greatest adventure of all time. It seemed natural to invite the world to join the quest,” says EyeWire’s founder, Sebastian Seung.

The Game

The game essentially works like a 3D puzzle. Players are tasked with the challenge of mapping the structure and connections of neurons by isolating individual cells from large three-dimensional microscopic image datasets. Think of it like a coloring book.

Remember how as a kid you were always taught to color within the lines? This is pretty much the same, but instead, players are tasked with the assignment of mapping out neurons from one side of a cube to the other, by scrolling up and down through the cube and rebuilding neurons in segments.

These cubes are the width of an average human hair (about 4.5 microns per side, technically speaking). Once players successfully fill in all the blanks, a visual 3D shape of the cell they just mapped is displayed.

If it sounds complex, it isn’t; it’s designed so anyone can play. EyeWire’s executive director, Amy Robinson, tells me its users are ”high school students, grandmothers, tugboat drivers, animators, everything. It’s amazing because hardly any of them have any neuroscience background, but yet they’re helping to make discoveries on how the brain works.”

To remind users that they are indeed playing a game, EyeWire provides a typical gaming experience. It features an elaborate profile system, achievement badges, special icons, a chat feature that allows you to interact with other players, and the capacity to unlock additional privileges as you level up through the game. It’s no surprise that the game currently has about 180,000 users. “The top players are actually online for 30, 40, 50 hours a week,” Robinson adds.

EyeWire is already looking ahead when it comes to integrating improvements into the gaming experience. Robinson notes, “we’re working now to create a lot of interesting visuals, educational material, all sets built around a mobile game, and think about how future games will basically become more gamified and more fun.”

To step their game up to the next level, EyeWire sought the help of Indicated, a company that develops interactive 3D software and media with a medical focus, to develop an Oculus Rift version of the game. EyeWire debuted the Oculus DK2 version of the game at the NIH Science in 3D conference in January.

Developing the VR version of the game wasn’t easy, Indicated co-founder Matthew Irwan notes.

“To produce the Oculus experience, EyeWire sent us about 650GB of the research data generated by their users. Individual neurons were identified and encoded in this data, and we used that information to generate the surface models that you see and experience. In this way, the neurons that you see around you in virtual space were not modeled by an artist, but correlate directly with the structures in the original source data.”

I was lucky enough to visit EyeWire’s office – which is based out of a WeWork space in Boston – to try the game for myself. I was blown away. As soon as I strapped myself into “the rift,” I was immersed in an environment that was filled with highways of neurons sprawled out in every direction. It was intense.

The VR experience incorporates a natural gaze-based navigation method (which lets a user fly toward a particular area simply by looking where they want to go). To add an educational element, Indicated embedded a few trigger points in the environment that show additional content such as educational videos, which appear as virtual billboards hovering in front of the user. This was one of the coolest experiences I’ve ever had with the Oculus Rift.

API

To make things more interesting, EyeWire recently released an API in the hopes of transforming the game to a platform.

“First, we created the game. Now we’re inviting game developers – really any developer – to build their own games to map the brain. New mechanics, creative interfaces…things we never thought of. Hopefully they will build games that are even more fun than EyeWire,” Robinson adds.

The API consists of a sample app and an HTTP API used for assigning players cubes and allowing them to submit them to a social computing server. A sample app can be found here. It consists of a bare-bones web app that can be used as the nucleus of new game designs or alternative applications.

The HTTP API allows third parties to retrieve cubes and submit player neuron traces. One of the developers who helped write the API, William Silversmith, tells me, “In time, we hope to develop an ecosystem of various game designs, and we will integrate the solutions they submit into the neural consensus weighted with the appropriate level of confidence we will acquire from continuously measuring submissions as compared to others and compared to our QA process.”

Although EyeWire is continuously making revolutionary strides in the gamification of scientific research, it’s certainly not the only one doing it.

Foldit, a research project out of the University of Washington Center for Game Science in collaboration with the UW Department of Biochemistry, is a 3D puzzle game that challenges users to fold proteins into the best possible molecular structure. Players are judged on criteria, including size and whether hydrophobic chains are surrounded by as many atoms as possible. The game was launched in 2008 and has been played by approximately 400,000 people.

In Planet Four, players are assigned the task of identifying and measuring features on the surface of the southern polar region of Mars. If space exploration isn’t your thing, TomNod brings it closer to home. Instead of scouring the surface of Mars, TomNod users crowdsource observations about the Earth’s surface. When Malaysia Airlines flight 370 went missing, TomNod directed its users to help search for the missing aircraft. In fact, the site couldn’t keep up with the traffic due to an influx of users looking to help.

“Through games, though building better computer vision AI and thus automating big neurodata analysis – our collective, collaborative, even gamified competitive brainpower will be the key to figuring [complex problems] out,” Robinson concludes.

Apple Confirms Tattoos Can Affect Apple Watch’s Heart Rate Sensor Readings

Apple has updated its Apple Watch support documentation, confirming that the device may have issues when worn by users who have wrist tattoos. The changes were added following a series of reports from new Apple Watch owners who found that their tattoos seemed to interfere with the smartwatch’s ability to track their pulse, or cause other problems. Apple now says that permanent and temporary changes to your skin, including the ink used in tattoos, can impact the heart rate sensor’s performance.

In addition, the document clarifies, the ink, pattern and saturation of the tattoo can block the light from the sensor, making it difficult for Apple Watch wearers to get reliable readings. That is to say, those with darker tattoos that cover more of the skin’s surface may have more issues than those with lighter tattoos that are smaller in size.

The paragraph on tattoos was added to a page detailing how the Apple Watch heart rates sensor works, in a section that explains what sorts of factors could affect the sensor’s performance and a wearer’s ability to get a good reading. The Internet Archive, which keeps historical copies of websites, shows that an earlier version of this same page didn’t include the note about tattoos, ahead of the Apple Watch’s launch in April.

That implies that Apple learned of the issues from user feedback, as Watch owners began to call in to report problems with their device. Some users even posted videos to YouTube demonstrating the problem first-hand, which were picked up by the media.

It’s not all that surprising that a wrist tattoo could impact the effectiveness of the Apple Watch’s light sensor. The sensor allows an Apple Watch owner to wear the device looser on the wrist – “snug but comfortable,” says Apple – and still get a good reading. Explains Apple:

Apple Watch uses green LED lights paired with light‑sensitive photodiodes to detect the amount of blood flowing through your wrist at any given moment. When your heart beats, the blood flow in your wrist — and the green light absorption — is greater. Between beats, it’s less. By flashing its LED lights hundreds of times per second, Apple Watch can calculate the number of times the heart beats each minute — your heart rate.

This type of technology has been known to cause problems in the past. For example, a reddit user several months ago noted that they had a problem getting a good reading using the Fitbit HR heart monitor. (A CNet report from 2014 also found that some of the then-current heart rate monitors on the market could also be thrown off by skin pigmentation.)

Apple Watch’s sensor is actually more advanced than the company has claimed, according to the teardown from iFixit posted in late April. The site said that Apple’s heart rate monitor is “actually a plethysmograph—it looks and acts like a pulse oximeter, but Apple isn’t claiming it can measure your blood oxygen level,” iFixit’s analysis noted. It suggested also that Apple wasn’t advertising the functionality due to FDA regulations.

Despite having this better sensor, it doesn’t solve the problems associated with inks on the skin blocking readings.

Apple recommends a workaround for those who experience these sorts of issues, saying that you can connect your Apple Watch wirelessly to external heart rate monitors, like Bluetooth chest straps. Of course, that’s not quite as elegant solution as simply wearing a watch, but at least it will give more serious athletes and other quantified self enthusiasts an alternative means of gathering this data.

Deep-Learning, Image-Analysis Startup Descartes Labs Raises $3.3M After Spinning Out Of Los Alamos National Labs

After being incubated in a government lab for seven years, Descartes Labs — a deep-learning image analysis startup — has raised $3.3 million of its own funding and spun off as a private company.

Descartes Labs is focused on taking satellite imagery, turning it into something coherent and analyzing it for useful data. Descartes Labs formally spun out of Los Alamos National Labs in August last year, but now that the company has attracted investor interest, it has a chance to more quickly spin up its operations. That includes hiring people — who are based in San Francisco and Los Alamos — as well as computational power.

“This isn’t typical image recognition. We’re doing physics on this, not looking for dogs and Coke cans,” Descartes Labs CEO Mark Johnson said. “It turns out remote sensing and astrophysics have a lot in common. If I take a lot of pictures in the sky, the sensors need calibrated, and I need to stitch those pictures together, and I need to do massive analysis. Well, if you turn that telescope around toward the Earth, you get a similar set of problems.”

The company is starting with tracking agriculture around the globe. In the U.S., agricultural data is well documented, but internationally it turns out there is very little well-reported information — though, to be sure, the data is there in the satellite imagery. In that sense, it goes from being a bureaucratic problem to a big-data problem that Descartes Labs can attack with machine learning.

The public data that comes down from those satellites also isn’t just in the visible spectrum — it’s in other bands like infrared, which is particularly useful when tracking crops.

For a problem as hefty as what Descartes Labs is trying to solve, you might expect the company to have to pay a lot for powerful computers that can handle those calculations. But the difference in 2015 is the insanely powerful computational processing that previously was only available for massive government projects is available through services like Amazon AWS and Google Cloud Compute Engine. And startups like Descartes Labs can buy it in lieu of building or buying massive supercomputers — on the cheap.

Part of that is due to the efficiency of the machine learning code, and that’s thanks to the expertise of his team — which also includes Mike Warren, a scientist at Los Alamos that ran a trillion-particle simulation of the universe. The rest of the team is staffed with scientists and cosmologists working on the hard science behind image recognition and machine learning.

It’s a good start for building a business in the near future as well. Businesses interested in that agricultural data — commodities traders, for example — have a limited amount of data that they can extrapolate into estimates of worldwide agricultural activity. Getting a better handle on that certainly is more valuable than making ballpark estimates on what sorts of food is being grown, imported and exported.

2014-10-12-L8-044034_10N_008_066_543The implications of the technology certainly go beyond that, but the company is starting off there because there isn’t really anything available on that scale. Johnson said the $3.3 million is just enough to get a product out the door and “have a few failures along the way and course correct,” as most startups inevitably do.

“When you invest in a very early stage, part of the opportunity and challenge is trying to figure out the addressable market,” said Venky Harinarayan, an investor in the company and a founder of Kosmix — which was acquired and turned into Walmart Labs. “We don’t want large ma1972-09-18-LM1-047034_10N_008_066_321rkets, we want markets growing quickly. If they’re large it’s hard for us to attack. Large markets require a lot of capital and a lot of investment — things startups don’t have. Markets growing quickly are easier for a startup to go after.”

Descartes Labs was incubated in Los Alamos National Labs for seven years before spinning out. But spinning a company out of a government-funded laboratory isn’t necessarily an easy feat. There’s plenty of negotiations that can drag on, and sometimes, the people running those startups are used to being well-funded and don’t know how to run a startup, Eric Chin at Crosslink Capital — an investor in Descartes Labs — said.

Descartes Labs is led by Johnson, formerly the CEO of Zite — which sold to CNN, and then subsequently to Flipboard — and a longtime product head. In fact, many of the investors in the company seemed to have known Johnson for about a decade, following his career from the very beginning as a product manager.

“I met him early in his career — when we meet people with the raw material [to become great], someone with the DNA or makings of a super star, we track them, we log them, we follow them,” Chin said. “He is and was on our [radar]. I’d message him every couple months, ‘how’s it going at CNN? how’s it going at Zite?’ He’s a good listener, he takes criticism well, but he also has conviction and he has confidence.”

Beyond agriculture, the imagery available — now and as it continues to pour in — has much broader implications than crops. With both of Johnson’s homes — New Mexico most recently, and California before that — stricken by drought, he was quick to rattle off a number of applications that could help those states manage a crisis like the drought and beyond that.

“We’ve begun to look at snowpack in California, water features — just looking at how things change over time, we discover amazing stuff,” he said. “As we poke around to more and more crops and more and more areas, we’re gonna discover surprising things. It’s not about how much corn is being grown, it’s whether that’s sustainable in the long term. A lot of wheat is in the Ogallala Aquifer, which took hundreds of years to fill, and if we aren’t careful will be drained in the near future. Acceleprise Accelerator Aims $3.5M Fund At Early Stage Enterprise Apps

Acceleprise Ventures, a San Francisco-based incubator anchored by investor Sean Glass, announced a new $3.5M fund with an pronounced enterprise app bent. It also announced 10 newly-funded companies.

The company works with 8-12 pre-seed B2B companies per round to help them grow from acquiring their first customers “to building scalable and repeatable processes that can fuel growth,” managing director, Michael Cardamone explained.

“We launched in June of last year, receiving about 100 applications for our first cohort and ultimately took seven companies that went through the program from August – December 2014. By December, we received about 215 applications for our second cohort that started in January and accepted 10 companies (less than a 5% acceptance rate),” he wrote in an email.

The company plans to use this fund to eventually invest in a total of 50-60 companies over five rounds. “We are in our second of the five we plan to do with this fund. The rest will be used for follow-on investments in subsequent rounds. We are doing two [rounds] per year from January to May and again from July to November,” he said.

At a high level, when Acceleprise looks at applications, it’s looking for a strong team with direct experience dealing with the problem they are trying to solve and the technical experience to execute and iterate on the product quickly.

That means no newbies need apply and the team at Acceleprise understands enterprise software at an acute level. It includes Karen Appleton, who was the eighth employee and an executive at Box, Nick Mehta, CEO of Gainsight and Rowan Trollope, SVP at Cisco, among others. Zuora CEO Tien Tzuo is also an investor.

“We take a very hands-on approach in crucial areas such as UX/design, product strategy, sales process, marketing and fundraising. We also make critical introductions to potential customers, partners, hires and investors throughout the program,” he said.

While that’s a sales pitch you would expect from any accelerator, he claims they truly look for quality over quantity. “We feel really good about the quality of companies we are seeing,” he said. He believes that will help fuel the growth of the company over time, especially since it is concentrating on enterprise SaaS companies, an area, that’s poised for continued growth.

So far, it has chosen a range of B2B companies that cross SMB to the enterprise. Some examples are Nova, which focuses on tech to advance computer-human interfaces. What this means on a practical level is that interfaces have be tuned to individuals and their goal is building products that do that. Another company, Pick, founded by early Yammer employees, is attacking meeting scheduling.

Acceleprise is obviously not alone in the accelerator market, even one that focuses on the enterprise. Earlier this year, we wrote about Alchemist Accelerator, another Silicon Valley incubator taking aim at this same market, but there seems to be space enough for competitors to battle it out.

It means B2B companies that previously might have found it hard to find an accelerator focused on their needs now have more choices — and that’s certainly a positive.

Microsoft Acquires Surface 3 Pen Tech From N-trig

Microsoft has confirmed the acquisition of pen technology used in the Surface Pro 3 and Surface 3, from supplier and longtime partner N-trig. The Israeli company is a key patent-holder for digital stylus and writing recognition tech, as well as the supplier behind the pen input technologies used by both Microsoft and many of its OEM partners, so this brings in-house one of the technologies that Microsoft has used as a marquee feature as its desktop OS gains support for devices like tablets and convertibles.

The N-trig tech in the current versions of both Surface Pro 3 and Surface 3 replaced Wacom as a supplier, which handled digital pen input for the Surface Pro 2 and earlier generations. The switch initially caused some apprehension among creative pros who’d grown used to using Surface’s digital drawing capabilities in their workflows, but digital art performance in the end was generally seen to be either on par with, or even improved vs. earlier models.

In an official blog post, Microsoft outlined part of the logic behind its acquisition as follows:

We can’t wait to show you what we’ll deliver for our Surface Fans in the future. Digital pens have a ways to go to be as good as pen and paper on some dimensions, and we’ll get there. But more importantly, adding the ability to capture and share the work you do with a digital pen opens up possibilities that traditional pen and paper just can’t match. Today’s investment is another step that will let us push that innovation forward.

Personally, I’m a big fan of what the Surface Pro 3 can do with apps like Adobe’s Creative Suite and Autodesk’s SketchBook, thanks in large part to its digital pen tech. Microsoft bringing that in-house helps it keep a key advantage close to its chest, even if that tech mostly appeals to the niche creative audience for now (handwriting recognition and transcription still has a ways to go before it becomes generally useful).

It also could help set the stage for a coming clash surround more advanced input for touch-based devices: Apple’s new Force Touch and Taptic tech strongly suggest that it will bring additional pressure-sensitive input options to future iOS devices, and rumors from earlier this year indicate Apple could be adding an advanced stylus to its roster for a forthcoming iPad Pro device.

The N-trig acquisition was originally reported back in February, with a rumoured $200 million price tag (price has not been officially disclosed), but Microsoft’s acquisition today is of the pen tech specifically and related assets, not the company as a whole.

Start-Up Chile SCALE Fund Makes Its First 9 Investments

Start-Up Chile SCALE, the follow-on fund backed by the Chilean government to boost local startup growth, is making its first nine investments.

The nine companies, all graduates of Start-Up Chile’s past three classes, will receive $100k each in equity-free funding. In exchange, the founders agree to keep their companies in Chile for at least a year, and serve as mentors to three Chilean startups while they’re there.

Sebastian Vidal, Director of Start-Up Chile, calls this “social equity.”

“In Latin America there’s a lack of experts — you can count on your fingers the success stories that we have,” says Vidal. So the solution, for now, is recruiting external talent to jump-start the local tech ecosystem through the accelerator, and providing incentives for entrepreneurs to stay in Chile after the program ends.

The $100k in ‘free money’ isn’t the only reason that the founders of these nine startups are choosing Chile over Silicon Valley.

Bureo, for instance, is building skateboards out of recycled fish nets, which make up 10% of plastic waste in the ocean, according to co-founder David Stover. They’re currently working with six fishing ports on the Chilean coastline and they’ve turned 10 tons of recycled fishing nets into skateboards since they started in 2013.

“Chile has a very robust fishing industry. We found a reputable recycler and qualified manufacturer in Santiago, so now we’re collecting materials and running a program that’s fully operational in Chile,” says Stover.

Bureo recently raised additional seed funding from Patagonia’s 20 Million & Change fund that backs for-profit entities solving environmental crises. Stover says Bureo brought its first boards to market in December 2014, and the company is already turning a profit.

According to Vidal, revenue was a prerequisite for all of the companies selected for the follow-on grant.

“We want to make sure that the business model is already validated, because in Latin America, a company with traction but no revenue in the first year is not considered successful — here, those companies will not get funding and they will die unless they go to the States,” says Vidal.

For the founders of themidgame, a social media marketing startup, relocating to the U.S. is not an option at all. Colombian founders Carlos Saavedra and Andrés Felipe Diaz recently graduated from Y Combinator’s Winter 2015 class but had to leave the country when their working visas expired.

“For us it’s an option to work from Chile while we sort out our visa problems,” says Saavedra, but adds that he plans to keep a permanent engineering hub in Chile because local developers cost about a third of Silicon Valley’s going rate.

Here are all nine companies selected for the SCALE grant:

  • TeliportMe is a travel sharing community that provides advanced marketing and analytics for travel companies that run campaigns on the site.
  • Bureo designs and manufactures sustainable skateboards sourced from marine debris.
  • RetiDiag helps primary healthcare centers screen diabetic patients and detect risk for blindness at a low cost through its retinal picture and telemedicine evaluation software.
  • Recorrido.cl is a ticket search and booking platform for the South American interurban bus market that lets travelers compare bus prices, schedules and services on any device.
  • Guarnic manages physical security operations and provides real time information on guard positioning, route compliance, panic alerts and more.
  • ZenHub is a project management solution for GitHub that displays real-time task boards, team analytics, and integrated file sharing.
  • GroupRaise helps users organize fundraisers where 20-200 people eat at a local restaurant that donates a percentage of the bill to a charitable cause.
  • Uanbai enables payments in social media platforms, such as Twitter, through direct messages.
  • Themidgame helps brands advertise through social media influencers on YouTube, Instagram, blogs and other platforms.
